Denver Brainstorming 5K – Thanks!
The Avielle Foundation’s first ever and first annual Brainstorming 5K was successfully held on August 25th, 2013. Approximately 350 people ran, walked, and rallied for brain health and collectively, we raised awareness and over $15,000 in funds.
The inaugural event was held at Clement Park in Littleton, CO. We were welcomed and supported by Phoenix 999 and The Rebels Project, two organizations formed following the Columbine and Aurora tragedies. At 10am, Dr. Jeremy Richman, CEO and Founder of The Avielle Foundation, kicked off the event and 5K. Participants were routed throughout the beautiful park and we paused to remember victims of violence as we ran past the Columbine Memorial. Dr. Richman said, ”It is through research, understanding, and education that we will identify what goes awry in the brain and leads to violent and aggressive behavior. With the community engagement of people like you, we can break down the barriers to people getting help for themselves or their loved ones, and to facilitate treatment and aid to those in need.”
Following the 5k, participants continued to rally for brain health as they enjoyed live music from The Rumor and took their finish line photos with Broncos cheerleaders. Brain healthy participants of all ages enjoyed face painting while they learned about the foundation’s mission at the Brain Games Station. Participants wanting to continue their workout enjoyed a yoga class on the grass and others relaxed in the Colorado sun with a nice cold brew generously provided by Crazy Mountain Brewing Company and Lukas Liquor Superstore. The silent auction was a hit and winners walked away with some amazing items such as a Hawaiian timeshare and a John Elway-signed Broncos playbook from their 1998 championship game.
Funds raised for The Avielle Foundation will prevent violence by fostering brain health research and community engagement and education initiatives. The Advisory Board is comprised of world renowned experts in the fields of brain health research and community engagement: Terrie E. Moffitt, Ph.D., John Krystal, M.D., James Blair, Ph.D., Adrian Raine, Ph.D., William Modzeleski, and Rosalind Wiseman. These individuals will help guide us where to direct funds to support breakthrough research in brain health and bridge behavioral and biochemical sciences. The funds will also be used to support community-based initiatives and programs which educate and strengthen connectivity, empathy, and understanding; decrease the shame, secrecy, and stigma associated with brain illness; and ultimately facilitate appropriate early-identification and prevention/intervention methods to prevent violence.
